STARTUP WINNER
Novobiom, a biomimicry inspired Belgian start-up, has developed an innovative soil mycoremediation solution, which provides an ecological solution for the remediation of contaminated industrial soils. Soil health and biodiversity loss are two of the biggest planetary challenges. Approximately 30% of Earth’s soil is currently degraded, and an estimated 90% will be degraded by 2050 if we do not change course. Close to 60% of Earths biodiversity is in the soil, so it is vital to restore our soils.
Novobiom’s mycoremediation process provides an alternative to physical, chemical, and thermal soil treatments. Their technology broadens the scope and efficacy of existing bioremediation solutions to the treatment of the most recalcitrant pollutants. They are also able to turn textile waste into biomolecular compounds (i.e biobased input for am among other cosmetics, replacing unsustainable sources). They do this in their biorefinery approach.
Moreover, Novobiom's commitment to biomimicry—drawing inspiration from nature—is evident in their innovative approach. They not only focus on mycoremediation but also repurpose waste, such as textile waste, into bioactive compounds for use in various applications, including cosmetics. This demonstrates their understanding of utilizing nature's capabilities for sustainable solutions. They are currently running pilot projects and working with clients, including Veolia, Valgo, L´oreal and Ecomaison.
