In an article about how mycelium is used to replace plastics in the seafood industry by the US news site Mongabay which has millions of followers, the founder of The Future is Fungi Award. Susanne gives her comments.

The article features startups in the space such as Mycobuoys and GrownBio.

The seafood industry is currently using a lot of styrofoam and plastic based equipments, but they look to change that and seek out more sustainable alternatives. Mycelium based alternatives offer just that, and we solutions emerging such as mycelium derived buoys and coolers for transporting fish.

They have strong drivers with them. As it is referred to in the article:

  • South Korea has banned marine buoys made with Styrofoam from 2025, and MPs in Canada are calling for a similar ban.

  • The European Union has stated that in 2025, manufacturers will be responsible for the end life of fishing gear.

  • The United Nations is expected to release a global treaty to curb plastic pollution by the end of 2024, adding more pressure.

It is still early, days, but we expect to see more mycelium based on the seafood industry going onwards.
